Two nights before celebrities ascended the staircase of the Met in designer gowns on the first Monday in May, a crowd gathered in the Beaux Arts Hall of the Brooklyn Museum. As the sea of young queer and trans people parted to form a runway, performer Chiquitita, the evening’s host, yelled into the mic: “Get in there! This is our moment!”

Celebrating Lady Gaga’s Chromatica album, Chiquitita has brought a one of a kind tribute cabaret to Brooklyn, saying, “Do you remember that feeling that you had at the height of Covid that you couldn’t share with anyone?” she says. “We’re going to bring that to you.”

To celebrate nightlife being back, Chiquitita arranged a shoot with 80+ Brooklyn-based performers raising money for black, trans-led collective For the Gwols. “After a year of being apart, I wanted to find a way to reunite… photographer Fred Attenborough and I spent weeks conceptualizing a way to showcase everyone’s individuality!”

The tribute to La Veneno, organized and hosted by Chiquitita, retold La Veneno’s life story as refracted through the miniseries she inspired. Chiqui found herself absolutely transfixed while watching last fall, saying, “It was just so special. We can’t not pay homage to that.”

Recreating a Valentino couture gown 10 feet in the air was no challenge for Chiquitita! For her “zebra themed” presentation in the latest “Drag Queen of the Year” pageant (organized by drag royalty Alaska5000,) Chiqui’s creation stole the show. (03/2021)
